Despite the newfound enthusiasm around drugs like psilocybin, MDMA, and even high-octane, super-psychedelic compounds like 5-MEO-DMT, LSD remains something of an outcast. Despite these hang-ups, some researchers are delving back into LSD-tweaked clinical investigations — albeit with requisite caution and circumspection. Randall reckons the group distributed upwards of 130 million doses of Orange Sunshine before federal drug agents finally busted the Brotherhood in 1972. Many of his cohorts ended up in prison, but Michael, Carol and their kids spent the next 12 years on the run before he was finally arrested in 1984 and sent to prison for five years. While Scully spent his time in prison reading up on how to get them out, Sand smuggled in drugs and got his cellmates high. His girlfriend at the time would visit him with a mouthful of drugs, hidden in a balloon and kiss the goods into his possession.

Before long, they also began to sell Afghan hashish, Hawaiian pot (the storied “Maui Wowie”), and eventually Colombian cocaine, much of which the Brotherhood smuggled to California in secret compartments inside surfboards and Volkswagen minibuses driven across the border. I still believed then, and I still believe now, that it has a lot of potential for doing a lot of good. But I was no longer convinced that just making a lot of LSD available was suddenly going to cause everybody to have the same kind of experience I did. And even if they did, after a number of years I realized that a lot of my friends who had the similar experiences were still behaving badly in a lot of ways.
Sand even says he managed to get LSD in the prison food, although the documentary doesn’t delve much into how. In the documentary, directed by Cosmo Feilding Mellen and now available on demand, both express that they ardently believed (and, in Sand’s case, at least, still believe) that LSD could save the world. “My first experience with taking acid changed everything,” Sand says at the start of the film.

Sand became fascinated with Eastern philosophies and took up yoga – which he would perform naked for the rest of his life. Of course, the mind-altering qualities of LSD – lysergic acid diethylamide – also led to misery, addiction and death for many of the hippy generation. Another journalist researching the Brotherhood for a book shared notes with Kirkley for a few years, but while the publisher for the book had a deadline, Kirkley did not, and he held out to get to the heart of the story. “I did 25 interviews over the course of seven years, and all during that time I kept trying to get to Mike and Carol. I met them a few times, and they were like, ‘You’re nice, but we’re not interested in telling you our story.’ They were fiercely protective,” Kirkley said. Three years later, after persistent efforts on Kirkley’s part, a relationship with Mike and Carol blossomed and their interviews solidified the legitimacy of the film. The weaving of such a powerful — and in the view of some true believers, actually magical — drug within the broader social fabric may affront some true-believing psychonauts’ own purity tests.

They each have a traditional hand-beaded bamboo stem, a ceramic bowl at the top (called a sarhana), and a ceramic base. One of the bowls is wrapped with beaded chainmail to prevent it from exploding from the heat; the other bowl, and both of the bases, are all replicas Travis made out of pottery during the late 1980s. The effects of these compounds are virtually exclusive to the mind. There are very few physiological effects, even with very large doses of the drug. Just like 1P-LSD, ALD-52 is a prodrug for LSD-25 (lysergic acid diethylamide), which means it must be metabolized to LSD before it can produce any of its psychedelic effects. Though the height of the ’60s counterculture era, rumor had it that the primary importer of recreational drugs was something called “the Brotherhood” — an organization so shadowy that many assumed its existence was strictly mythological. But in fact a handful of West Coast surfers and early flower children did take extraordinary risks bringing psychedelic substances to the people in mass quantities, their goal being not illicit wealth but a “revolution” of lysergic enlightenment.
The underlying mechanisms involved in this process have, however, never been formally investigated. Here we studied the interaction between LSD and music-listening on eyes-closed imagery by means of a placebo-controlled, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. Twelve healthy volunteers received intravenously administered LSD (75 ug) and, on a separate occasion, placebo, before being scanned under eyes-closed resting conditions with and without music-listening. The parahippocampal cortex (PHC) has previously been linked with (1) music-evoked emotion, (2) the action of psychedelics, and (3) mental imagery. You don’t even realize that you’re altered unless you talk with someone who isn’t stoned, then you realize that you really are stoned. For some it offered an intensely spiritual experience and especially influenced music and art.
A famous batch of LSD circulating through the late 60s in California called Orange Sunshine was long believed to be made from ALD-52. These exceptionally potent blotter tabs were synthesized by legendary psychonauts of the time, Nick Sands and Tim Scully. Later Life
A year later, Sand’s reputation as a drug chemist had spread to San Francisco, where another self-taught chemist, Owsley Stanley, was cranking out millions of doses of LSD. But as the movement attracted more seekers, Millbrook was phased out as Haight-Ashbury became the movement’s epicenter. There is a lot that healthy people could do with psychedelics if done responsibly.

Members of The Brotherhood had connections to other prominent counterculture figures at the time, including Timothy Leary and the Grateful Dead, which helped to establish the group’s influence. As fate would have it, police raided Scully’s Denver lab in 1968, and while he managed to escape arrest, he was out of a lab. Sand agreed to finance a new lab for producing LSD in exchange for Tim Scully’s knowledge of Owsley Stanley’s process.
